American looks for Formula One breakthrough

...And, most challenging of all, he had to overcome the fact that his country's flag is red, white and blue.

"The reputation of American drivers in Europe is not the best," said Speed, who drives for the new Italian-based team of Scuderia Toro Rosso.

"But I don't worry too much about it.

I'm just hoping to change some opinions." In the realm of international auto racing, Yanks are considered driving-impaired.

There have been only two Formula One champions from the United States - Phil Hill in 1961 and Mario Andretti in 1978 - and no American has even been behind a wheel in the prestigious series since Michael Andretti in 1993.

Now along comes a Northern Californian with the perfect name for racing.

But Speed's coming-out party will occur with precious little fanfare in this country, and that's exactly why much is riding on his success or failure.

Formula One is considered the glamorous, globe-trotting pinnacle of auto racing, competing in exotic locales like Monaco and the small Persian Gulf nation of Bahrain.

But it's barely a blip on the U.S.

One indication of just how dismissive other Formula One drivers are of Americans came last summer when Englishman Jenson Button was asked how Speed had performed after he had an opportunity ...

Nucryst Pharmaceuticals granted new acne patent

... Atopic dermatitis, a form of eczema, is a chronic, inflammatory disease of the skin affecting more than 15 million people in the United States.

Incidence rates are thought to be similar in other industrialised countries.

The hallmark of the disease is pruritus (itchiness).

The disease ranges from an occasional irritating rash to persistent and widespread inflammation covering much of the patient's body.

Due to the inflammation, itching, and scratching, the skin of a person with atopic dermatitis is more likely to become infected with bacteria or viruses than someone with normal skin.

The illness most often presents in infancy and childhood.

Scientists estimate that 65 per cent of patients develop symptoms in the first year of life and 90 per cent develop symptoms by the age of five.

The latest estimates suggest about 50 per cent of patients will have symptoms recur in adulthood.

...The indication, which is for moderately to severely active "Our research demonstrated that UC patients treated with Remicade achieved mucosal healing and disease remission while they had failed conventional therapies," Paul Rutgeerts of the University Hospital Gasthuisberg in Leuven, Belgium, and lead investigator of the ACT 2 trial, said in a statement issued by Schering.

"These patients with UC had limited treatment options, with many facing surgery," Rutgeerts said.

"Remicade represents a significant advance for these patients." Remicade is approved in the European Union for several other inflammatory diseases, including Crohn's disease, rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, psoriatic arthritis and plaque psoriasis.
