Analysis: Remicade works for psorasis

...No new safety concerns were noted over the 50 week period of the EXPRESS II study." And Remicade's benefits appeared to have staying power in both studies.

"Both studies show a profound response in patients, and a response that was sustained over one year," Kim Papp, dermatologist and director of research at Probity Medical Research, a consortium of North American dermatology research clinicians, located in Waterloo, Ontario, told UPI.

After 10 weeks 70 percent of EXPRESS II patients receiving Remicade 3 mg/kg and 75 percent of patients receiving 5 mg/kg achieved at least a 75-percent improvement in psoriasis as measured by the standard Psoriasis Area Severity Index (PASI 75) score, compared with 2 percent of patients receiving placebo.

What's more, at the 10-week mark 45 percent of EXPRESS II patients experienced complete clearance of the skin condition (PASI 90), compared to 0.5 percent of patients on placebo.

Results were even more dramatic in the EXPRESS trial.

At 10 weeks 80 percent of treated patients achieved a PASI score of at least 75 vs.

Eventually they can increase in size to grow through the wall, eventually causing a blockage in the colon.

However, many times polyps or cancers of the colon and rectum fail to produce any symptoms at all.

When they do, the most common symptoms are painless rectal bleeding, or a change in bowel habits such as constipation, increased frequency or diarrhea.

However, it is unfortunately very common for these same symptoms to be disregarded by a patient with the admission, "Oh, I've had a continuous problem with hemorrhoids for years."Although it is true that there are many common, noncancerous conditions that can cause rectal bleeding, it should never be dismissed in those at risk by age or history without proper investigation. The concept of "screening" refers to using one or more tests to identify whether a person without any symptoms has a disease or condition that may lead to colorectal cancer.

"Surveillance" involves similar tests on people at higher risk such as those with pre...
