...He told the 'Boston Herald' newspaper that the disease is today controlled with medication.

''It's part of this whole thing that's made everything so hard,'' Speed said in an interview.

The first American to reach F1 since Michael Andretti in 1993, however, will not be content to roll around at the rear of the grid.

Speed explains: ''I think realistically my personal goal is to become a world champion.

If this year helps me learn and helps me get closer to that, it will be a success.'' Councillor fights back to health

... His condition is one of the few in the world that’s actually improved a little by smoking about 20 cigarettes a day, but he hated the habit and could only smoke light cigarettes – strong ones made him gag.

For years Mr Champion has been putting off major surgery to remove his large intestine but in recent months his condition deteriorated suddenly and he had no option but to go under the knife.

“It got pretty bad in November — I’d been at a conference in Canberra and when I got home I was so crook I had the shakes,” he said.

“I was admitted to Nambour Hospital on November 10 and taken to Brisbane the next day.

“I was in hospital for seven days and they stabilised me and gave me some scans which showed that the lining of the bowel was very thin and had micro perforations which meant I was also being poisoned with septicaemia.

“When I started to get sick in Canberra I already decided to book in for the bowel operation I’d been putting off for a while so when I came home from hospital I looked after my body as well as I could, and started controlling my working hours, cutting them down.” On December 12 he returned to hospital in Brisbane to have his scheduled bowel operation in which surgeons removed the large intestine and made an internal bowel out of his small intestine.
